Veteran Pass Rusher Still on the Market
The Detroit Lions released veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith earlier this season in a cap-saving move. Since then, Smith has remained a free agent and is among the top players still available as offseason workouts near their conclusion.
Smith’s Desire to Return to Detroit
Despite his release, Smith has expressed a strong desire to return to the Lions. “We both know where I want to be,” Smith told Tyler Dragon of USA TODAY Sports.
“Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I’m there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully, I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit.”
The Lions acquired Smith midway through last season to help offset injuries on the defensive front. During his eight regular-season appearances, he recorded four sacks, 12 tackles, and one pass defensed. Even at 32, he remains effective at pressuring quarterbacks and defending the run.
Veteran Leadership and Championship Aspirations
Smith brings value as a rotational edge rusher, capable of setting the edge and providing leadership. He has previously played for the Ravens, Packers, Vikings, Browns, and Lions. His goal now is to compete for a Super Bowl title.
“I’m going into Year 11. As a veteran, (a championship) is the only thing that I’m missing,” Smith said. “I did the sacks, All-Pro, Pro Bowl, so it’s really just me getting a ring now and winning a championship.”
Detroit’s Need at Edge Rusher
The Lions still have a need at the edge position. Aidan Hutchinson is recovering well, and while the team re-signed Marcus Davenport, his injury history raises concerns. The team waited until the sixth round to draft a pass rusher, selecting Ahmed Hassanein. Adding a rotational presence like Smith could strengthen their defensive line.
Waiting Game for Free Agents
With most NFL teams holding minicamps this week, veteran free agents like Smith may have to wait until closer to training camp to find a new team. Some may even remain unsigned until after Week 1, when veteran contracts are no longer guaranteed.
