Johnson Eager to Thrive in Arizona’s Defensive Scheme
Though rookie cornerback Will Johnson slipped further in the NFL Draft than many expected, he believes he has landed in the perfect defensive fit with the Arizona Cardinals. “Super exciting. I mean, that scheme is amazing,” the Arizona Cardinals rookie said Thursday.
“It’s a cornerback’s dream. So, I’m excited to play in it. I’m excited to get comfortable with it. And just learn more about it. I’ve learned a good amount so far, so just continue to learn and get comfortable in it, and make a lot of plays.”
First On-Field Opportunity Comes at Rookie Minicamp
With the Cardinals set to begin rookie minicamp on Friday, Johnson will get his first real opportunity to absorb the scheme designed by head coach Jonathan Gannon and defensive coordinator Nick Rallis.
Once considered a potential top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Johnson ended up being selected 47th overall. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, concerns about his knee contributed to the slide. Johnson has maintained since draft night that he is fully healthy.
Motivated by Draft Slide, Confident in Fit
Now joining a system he believes is tailored to his abilities, Johnson is channeling his draft-day disappointment into motivation as he begins his pro career. “I’ve been able to move on, it’s just motivation,” Johnson said. “I know there’s going to be something special here, so I’m excited for it.”
Young Secondary Looking to Make Its Mark
Johnson arrives as part of a broader defensive overhaul in Arizona. The team added veteran defensive linemen Josh Sweat, Calais Campbell, and Dalvin Tomlinson to help build pressure up front. In the secondary, Johnson will line up alongside fellow 2024 second-rounder Max Melton and 2023 third-round nickelback Garrett Williams, forming a young core of corners.
Veteran safety Budda Baker remains a key playmaker in the back end, and if the defensive line can consistently generate pressure, this youthful secondary could have significant upside.
