Andrew Van Ginkel is staying in Minnesota and he’s getting paid.
The Minnesota Vikings have signed the breakout linebacker to a one-year, $23 million contract extension, NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday. The team later confirmed the news.
Van Ginkel, who originally joined the Vikings on a two-year $20 million deal in 2024, was under contract through 2025. But after delivering a career year in his first season with Minnesota, the Vikings opted to reward the 29-year-old with a significant raise and an additional year of security.
It’s easy to see why. Van Ginkel thrived in Minnesota’s defense after five seasons in Miami. Finishing the year with a career-high 79 tackles, 11.5 sacks and two interceptions. Both of which he returned for touchdowns.
He nearly had a third pick in Week 18 against the Lions, capping off a season that far exceeded expectations.
By locking him in now, the Vikings avoid the risk of losing Van Ginkel in 2026 free agency. Where another standout season would’ve made him one of the most sought-after defensive players on the market.
Instead, they ensure his continued presence as a key piece of a defense that helped fuel a 14-3 campaign in 2024.
For a team with championship aspirations, securing one of their top defenders is a calculated move that sends a clear message: the Vikings are investing in players who deliver.
