Jones Seizes Opportunity During Offseason Workouts
With Anthony Richardson once again sidelined due to injury this offseason, Daniel Jones has made significant strides in the race for the Indianapolis Colts’ starting quarterback position.
Signed during the offseason to challenge Richardson, Jones has capitalized on increased reps by establishing connections with key targets like Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce, and rookie tight end Tyler Warren.
“Very pleased with what we got right now,” Shane Steichen said Thursday, via CBS4 Indy. “He’s been doing a hell of a job. Really smart football player. Learned the offense very quickly, making really good decisions out there through OTAs. Obviously, we want to carry that over to training camp, but he’s done a really good job. Great command in the huddle. Ultimate pro.”
Jones Finds New Life After Giants Release
After his release from the New York Giants midseason, Jones joined the Minnesota Vikings as a backup to Sam Darnold. Although the Vikings reportedly considered bringing him back, he ultimately signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts, an opportunity that has positioned him to compete for the starting role.
His choice appears to be paying off. With most of the spotlight on Richardson’s health, Jones has stayed focused on his own development. “I think it’s like you would in any situation,” he said Thursday. “Just learning this offense and getting used to it. So, I’m trying to focus as much on that and then playing good football when I’m on the practice field.”
Richardson’s Health Remains a Concern
One major factor behind the Colts’ decision to bring in a veteran quarterback was Richardson’s continued struggles to stay healthy. The first-round pick has only played 15 games in two seasons. Although head coach Shane Steichen has indicated that Richardson should be ready for training camp, his inability to stay healthy through the offseason is troubling.
If Richardson’s injury issues persist into July or flare up again, Daniel Jones may emerge as the frontrunner to start in Week 1 for the Colts.
