As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, one thing is clear for the Denver Broncos: they’re still on the hunt for help in the backfield.
Head coach Sean Payton made it clear during Thursday’s pre-draft press conference that Denver plans to target the running back position next week.
“There will be focus on the running back position. It’s a pretty good draft for running backs,” Payton said, according to the team’s official transcript.
With a deep pool of talent at running back this year, many teams including the Broncos are opting to find value through the draft rather than spending in free agency.
“There are two great allies that help quarterback play: a strong defense and a solid running game,” Payton said.
The Broncos are hoping that boosting their ground game will aid quarterback Bo Nix’s development in his second season. Payton has been vocal throughout the offseason about wanting to add a “Joker”-type playmaker, someone versatile enough to create mismatches. While Denver already signed tight end Evan Engram to help fill that role, Payton hinted another addition could come in the form of a dynamic running back.
Currently, the Broncos’ running back room features Jaleel McLaughlin, rookie power runner Audric Estimé, Tyler Badie, undrafted free agent Blake Watson, and fullback Michael Burton. It’s a group with potential but lacking a clear lead back.
Asked whether the Broncos might consider taking a running back as early as the first round, they hold the 20th overall pick. Payton didn’t dismiss the idea.
“It’s all about your vision for the player,” he said. “Sometimes you pass on a player not because you don’t want them, but because another need falls into your lap. If the right guy is there and fits our plan, we won’t hesitate.”
Payton reflected on past draft decisions in New Orleans, pointing to the selections of Reggie Bush and Mark Ingram as examples of how flexibility and vision shape a draft strategy.
Even if Denver doesn’t select a running back on Day 1, all signs point to them making a move at the position before the draft wraps up. With a deep class and a clear need, it’s a matter of when not if the Broncos bolster their backfield.
