The Los Angeles Rams know the clock is ticking on quarterback Matthew Stafford’s career, but head coach Sean McVay isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet. After a season that rekindled playoff hopes in LA, McVay is holding out hope that Stafford stays under center for more than just one more year.
“We have a chance with him every time he’s at the switch,” McVay said. “I love working with him. I think he can play as long as he wants, but fortunately I’m hoping it’s a couple more years.”
Stafford recently agreed to a revised contract after a stretch of uncertainty. While the Rams allowed him to explore trade options this offseason, with teams like the Raiders and Giants expressing interest, Stafford ultimately reaffirmed his commitment to staying in Los Angeles.
McVay noted that the open and honest conversations between them only strengthened their bond. “When you’re able to have real conversations with people you love and care about, you either grow apart or come closer,” McVay said.
“And there’s no question in my mind, we’re closer than ever. There’s a lot of appreciation and gratitude that we worked through it.”
General manager Les Snead referred to the outcome as a “renewal of vows,” and McVay echoed the sentiment. He spoke glowingly about Stafford’s leadership, intelligence, toughness and influence within the locker room.
The Rams have been in transition since their Super Bowl win in 2021, but Stafford has remained the steadying force. Last season, he led a young, retooled team to an NFC West title and a playoff win over Minnesota.
In the Divisional Round, they nearly upset the eventual champion Eagles in what became one of Philly’s toughest postseason games.
“He came out of this season feeling really good physically,” McVay said. “You look at the playoff games he’s had with us: he went 4-0 in our Super Bowl run, fought to the end in Detroit [2023] and this year he balled out again. He gives us a chance every time.”
While Stafford appears rejuvenated, the Rams have not yet made a move to secure a clear successor. Jimmy Garoppolo remains a veteran stop-gap, while Stetson Bennett is still on the roster.
The Rams opted not to draft a quarterback this year, likely eyeing the more promising 2026 Draft class.
