Retirement Considered Before Re-Signing
Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack considered retirement this offseason before ultimately choosing to re-sign with the team. At 34 years old, Mack had the option to pursue a championship elsewhere but described returning to L.A. as an easy decision. “Why not here, man?” Mack said on Wednesday, via ESPN’s Kris Rhim.
One-Year Deal Focused on Winning
Mack signed a one-year, $18 million contract to stay with the Chargers. Although he was among the top free-agent edge rushers on the market, he emphasized that his decision wasn’t driven by money.
“I had to be fair in the approach to things and not making it about just finances and all the different things,” Mack said. “I tried to make it more so just about winning ball games.”
Still Producing at a High Level
Despite registering just six sacks last season, tied for the lowest mark since his rookie year in 2014, Mack still earned a Pro Bowl selection, his third in a row. His impact on the field remains evident even as he enters his 12th NFL season.
Unfinished Business in the Postseason
Over his 11-year career with the Raiders, Bears, and Chargers, Mack has played in five postseason games but has yet to record a win. He’s hoping to change that narrative in Los Angeles.
“Just not wanting to give up on that goal and that ambition that I have ever since I stepped into the league,” Mack said. “I knew I wanted to play in important games and win a Super Bowl.”
