A Bittersweet Goodbye for the 49ers
San Francisco’s transitional offseason included the departure of a cherished star in Deebo Samuel. The end felt somewhat inevitable. Samuel had battled through multiple injuries, and his production, along with his importance within the 49ers offense, had declined. When general manager John Lynch finalized the trade that sent Samuel to Washington, expectations were ultimately met.
Still, Samuel’s exit left teammates to adjust to a new reality. For tight end George Kittle, it was a moment to appreciate the time they shared, rather than mourn what was lost. “I’m happy for him that he went to Washington,” Kittle said during an appearance on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast.
“Guys need a fresh start sometimes, and he wanted a fresh start, and so, I’m very happy for him. I’m sad that I don’t have him on my team anymore because I just loved having him around the locker room and stuff like that. But I’m happy for him.”
A New Chapter in Washington
At 29, Samuel remains in the prime of his career. His trade to Washington has energized a fanbase already buoyed by a dreamlike 2024 season that ended with a trip to the NFC Championship Game. Many believe Samuel is one of the final pieces needed to push the Commanders toward a Super Bowl appearance.
Questions remain about whether Samuel can return to the form that once saw him rack up 1,405 receiving yards in a season. Those answers won’t come right away, but Washington appears to offer an ideal setting. Samuel joins a rising star in quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is entering his second NFL season after earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in a breakout 2024 campaign.
Kittle for his part finds comfort in the people surrounding Samuel in his new home, including some familiar faces. “I’m happy he went to Washington because Adam Peters is there, our old assistant GM, and he’s the man,” Kittle added. “And then, also, they’re pretty good at football, too.”
Looking Ahead with Optimism
Just a week ago, Daniels was asked about Samuel. He smiled while describing his vision of throwing a short pass to Samuel and watching him take it 80 yards for a touchdown. In dreams, those plays happen often. Washington will be hoping to bring those dreams to life in 2025. And if they do, Kittle will likely be smiling right along with them.
