Kenny Pickett has made it clear he wants to be the Browns’ starting quarterback. But Joe Flacco isn’t making any declarations just yet.
During a recent appearance on ESPN Cleveland, the veteran quarterback said nothing has been decided when it comes to who will start under center in 2025.
“I don’t think there’s any expectation of exactly who’s going to be the starting quarterback,” Flacco said. “I’m excited to get in that room, show I’ve got a lot of football left and do my best to prove that. Just like you would in any new situation.”
Cleveland re-signed Flacco to an incentive-based deal after a short stop in Indianapolis. He returns to the team where he won the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year award. His familiarity with Kevin Stefanski’s offense could give him an edge over Pickett.
With the draft a week away, there’s also a chance the Browns add a rookie quarterback. Whether that comes early or late, Flacco says he’s fine with competition and mentoring if needed.
“I think competition in that quarterback room breeds the environment to become the best version of yourself,” he said.
Now 40 years old, Flacco enters his 18th NFL season. He was originally a first-round pick by the Ravens in 2008.
“I love football. I still feel like I can do it at a high level,” he said. “And I’ve got five kids at home, I’ve got to get away from them a little bit.”
Whether Flacco ends up starting or helping guide younger players, Cleveland is giving him another shot. The next week may offer a clearer picture of what his role will be.
