Carr’s Shoulder Injury Clouds 2025 Outlook
Uncertainty looms over Derek Carr’s availability for the 2025 NFL season as the New Orleans Saints monitor developments related to his throwing shoulder injury. NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that Carr has visited the Saints’ facility twice in recent weeks to consult with the team doctor. Carr, who is hoping to avoid surgery, continues to evaluate his options.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport initially reported the injury on April 11, revealing that the ailment could potentially jeopardize Carr’s upcoming season. Since then, both Saints GM Mickey Loomis and Carr himself have acknowledged the situation, though specifics remained unclear until now.
Origin and Timeline of the Injury
According to Slater, Carr believes the injury occurred during a Week 14 loss to the New York Giants, a game in which he also injured his wrist. That game marked his final appearance for the Saints in the 2024 season. The shoulder issue remained under the radar until Carr began throwing again in the spring, at which point he noticed the lingering problem.
The 34-year-old’s reluctance to undergo another surgery stems from a prior procedure on the same arm, heightening the stakes of his current decision. While there’s no official timeline, Slater reports a resolution could come “sooner rather than later.”
Carr’s Impact and Career Resume
Derek Carr, a veteran of 11 NFL seasons, has compiled a decorated career with 41,254 passing yards, 257 touchdowns and four Pro Bowl nods during his nine years with the Raiders. Since joining the Saints, he has played in 10 games. Posting a 5-5 record while throwing for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2024.
Carr missed seven games last season due to oblique and wrist issues, highlighting growing durability concerns as he nears the twilight of his career.
Saints’ Quarterback Options Behind Carr
With Carr’s availability in question, the Saints’ quarterback room consists of three young, largely untested players: 2023 fourth-rounder Jake Haener, 2024 fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler and rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough. All three saw playing time during Carr’s absences last season, but none bring veteran experience.
First-year head coach Kellen Moore faces a significant challenge: either prepare for Carr’s return or develop a plan for a season led by young and inexperienced quarterbacks.
What Lies Ahead for the Saints
As the Saints await a decision from Carr and his medical team, the franchise finds itself in a precarious position. With the 2025 season approaching clarity on Carr’s status is crucial, not just for roster planning but for the team’s overall competitiveness in a tough NFC South.
For now, the Saints and their fans must wait, hoping for a resolution that gives the team stability at the most important position on the field.
