The suspense may technically remain, but the writing’s on the wall in bold letters: Cam Ward is on deck to become the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
On Tuesday, Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi confirmed that the team will hold firm at the No. 1 spot. He stayed tight-lipped on the pick itself, urging fans to tune in Thursday night. But the football world is already buzzing with near-certainty.
That pick? Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
Ward, speaking Wednesday at an NFL PLAY 60 event outside Lambeau Field, sounded every bit like a man preparing to become the face of a franchise.
“I got a chance to learn more about [the Titans] personally over the last couple of months, and I am excited to hopefully hear my name called first,” said Ward, via the Titans’ official website. “They’ve got a great owner, a great GM and a great coaching staff. In my opinion, they don’t get enough credit for how good that team really is on paper.”
The Titans have done little to hide their admiration. They sent a full squad to Ward’s pro day at Miami and many of those faces (GM Borgonzi, head coach Brian Callahan and even owner Amy Adams Strunk) were present again on Wednesday. Ward even got a pre-draft hug from Commissioner Roger Goodell, a moment that felt more like a spoiler than a photo-op.
Adding to the symbolism, Ward met with Hall of Famer Warren Moon. The legendary quarterback who wore No. 1 for the Houston Oilers, now the Titans. While Moon’s jersey is retired by the franchise, he hinted he might consider allowing Ward to wear it if asked.
“I’m thinking about it,” Moon told PaulKuharsky.com.
If the pick unfolds as expected, Ward would head to Nashville with a strong foundation already in place. He praised the team’s revamped offensive line and their new-look receiving corps, headlined by veteran Calvin Ridley.
Ward is also excited about working with Coach Callahan, who previously guided Joe Burrow during his breakout rookie season in Cincinnati.
“Coach Callahan’s offense really translates to what I did at Miami,” Ward explained. “I think it would be plug-and-play, just some new terminology [and] protections to learn. But I think we’d be good.”
“I just hope I’m that guy,” Ward said.
The Titans and Ward are aiming for great.
As draft night nears, there’s little left to guess. All that’s left is for the Commissioner to make it official.
