Aaron Rodgers Shares Why He’s Playing One Last Season In Pittsburgh

    The DK Metcalf Factor

Aaron Rodgers opened up on Tuesday about his decision to play one final season, this time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While many speculated on various motivations, Rodgers made it clear that one key factor influenced his move: wide receiver DK Metcalf.

“D.K. is a lead-by-example guy,” Rodgers said during his Tuesday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. “He’s a big reason I’m in Pittsburgh as well. Conversations that we had, and just the kind of person that he is. At the start of the year, I didn’t really know DK at all.”

“He’s like, ‘I work out at 6 a.m. every day.’ I’m like, OK, this guy has discipline, this guy has a drive. I said, How about 8 o’clock because I’m gonna have to drive from Malibu to UCLA? He said, ‘Yeah, that’s fine.’ He’s not just a specimen, but he’s a really solid human being.”

Rodgers praised Metcalf’s leadership style and the energy he brings to the field. “He is a solid dude, and he leads by example. The way he practices. The room goes how the top dog goes, and when DK catches the ball and finishes 60 yards to the end zone, it makes everyone else want to do the same thing.”

    Steelers Seeking Explosive Plays

Pittsburgh is hoping that Metcalf can deliver the kind of explosive plays their offense lacked last season. In 2024, the Steelers only managed two touchdown receptions of over 30 yards: a 32-yard strike to Mike Williams in Week 10 against Washington, and a 55-yarder to Calvin Austin III in Week 3 to seal a win over the Chargers.

Although George Pickens had the potential to produce such plays, the team traded him to Dallas after acquiring Metcalf. With Metcalf’s proven ability, he recorded three touchdowns of over 30 yards in his final year with Seattle, Pittsburgh is betting big on his impact.

More Than Just a Deep Threat

Rodgers emphasized that Metcalf brings more than just big-play potential. His consistent work ethic and leadership could inspire teammates and elevate the overall performance of the team.

At the very least, the Steelers will have one season to see what Rodgers and Metcalf can accomplish together. Rodgers is clearly hoping to recapture some of the magic he once shared with Davante Adams during their years in Green Bay.

I've been hooked on football since I first picked up a ball as a kid. After years of coaching and living the highs and lows of the game, I turned my passion into writing. Now I cover the NFL with the same love and energy I had on the field.
