Past Comments Sparked Controversy
Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jared Verse stirred controversy during last season’s playoffs when he openly declared his dislike for Philadelphia Eagles fans. His remarks didn’t sit well with the Eagles’ passionate supporters and quickly drew headlines across the league.
A Shift in Tone During Recent Interview
Though he hasn’t fully retracted his earlier statement, Verse recently offered a more respectful view of Philadelphia’s fan base during an interview with Whistle. When asked to name the best opposing fan base in the NFL, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year didn’t hesitate to give credit where it’s due.
“Probably the Eagles,” Verse said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I’ve got to give them that. I like when you kind of get into it, you’re aggressive, you’re loud, and they stand by that with no doubt.”
A Tough Crowd to Play In Front Of
Verse also acknowledged the unique atmosphere at Lincoln Financial Field, calling it the most difficult stadium to play in as a visiting player. “Playing the Eagles is like playing your rival in college because you never know what they’re going to say, and they’re going to try to say disrespectful stuff,” Verse added.
“They’re going to bring something up. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not going to say anything where it’s like, ‘Bro, you crossed a line.’ But they’re going to say something where you’re like, ‘Hey, who you talking to?’”
Respect and Rivalry Coexist
Despite his past criticism, Verse’s new comments show a complicated mix of rivalry and respect. His experience reflects a sentiment likely shared by many NFL players: frustration with Eagles fans’ intensity, but admiration for their loyalty and passion.
The Eagles defeated the Rams 28-22 in last season’s playoff clash. The two teams are set to meet again in Week 3, this time in Philadelphia.
