An Overlooked Storyline in the NFC West
Robert Saleh’s return to the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator is quietly shaping up to be one of the more intriguing developments in the NFC West. Known for his intense and passionate approach, Saleh is back in the building where he first helped craft one of the league’s fiercest defenses.
During media appearances this week, 49ers tight end George Kittle addressed Saleh’s return. “Violence is coming is what I would say,” Kittle responded on The Rich Eisen Show.
A Familiar Face Returns
Saleh was instrumental in building the 49ers’ defense during the early years of Kyle Shanahan’s coaching tenure. After leaving to become head coach of the New York Jets in 2021, his defensive legacy in San Francisco was carried forward by DeMeco Ryans for two years. However, the unit has lacked stability recently, with Steve Wilks and Nick Sorensen each serving just one season.
Despite a challenging head coaching stint in New York, Saleh’s defenses remained elite, ranking in the top five in yards allowed in both 2022 and 2023. His coaching style is marked by relentless pressure and high-energy play, qualities the 49ers are eager to reintegrate.
Kittle Praises Saleh’s Impact
George Kittle shared his enthusiasm about working with Saleh again, praising the coach’s motivational skills and intelligence. “He’s really good at his job, and I’m really excited that we somehow convinced him to be our defensive coordinator again,” Kittle said.
“He knows what he’s talking about, he’s inspiring, he gets the boys fired up, and he just happens to also be really, really smart. So, I’m pumped to have him back in the building, just hanging out with him a little bit, talking about stuff. You can just tell he’s ready to roll this year, and he’s gonna get the boys fired up.”
Youth Movement on Defense
The 49ers’ offseason changes have largely affected the defensive side of the ball, with several rookies expected to assume key roles. Defensive linemen Alfred Collins and Mykel Williams are anticipated starters, while linebacker Nick Martin and cornerback Upton Stout could also see significant playing time.
Saleh’s experience and leadership may be crucial in helping these young players adjust quickly and perform at a high level. His return could be exactly what the 49ers need to reestablish their identity on defense.
